JOY YEE NOODLE – CHICAGO, IL

One of the busiest restaurant in Chicago Chinatown. Their popular for their bubble tea and smoothie, you literally see everyone holding one of their drink around Chinatown. The menu is huge, but food is so-so, very slappy.

We ordered couple smoothies. Real Fruits – no bad.

Tofu Fish Cake – can’t go wrong with fried food. Very hot from fryer.

Eel and Beef Cube over Tomato Rice – the presentation was impressive, served in a little bucket. Eel serving was a bit small, beef was good. Rice was a bit greasy.

Pierrot Gourmet Ham & Cheese and French Onion Soup – salty ham, gruyere cheese, on warm crusty pretzel bread served with mustard butter and mixed greens. The french onion soup was ok, not the best I’ve tasted.

I got the Pen Chicken Salad – spinach, apples, bacon, nuts, pulled chicken, dried cranberries, cheese with bacon dressing (more like a sweet/tangy dressing). Portion was good, extremely tasty, one of the best salad I ever ate. Love!

HING KEE 珍味佳 – CHICAGO, IL (CHINATOWN) 小籠包 and 手工牛肉拉麵刀削麵

I’ve seen Hing Kee many many times, but never tried it and I am glad I did this time.

There used to be a male chef hand making the noodles infront of the restaurant, I believe they opened another restaurant at the end of the street (because I saw the same chef making noodles there, I forgot the name). Anyway, Hing Kee is popular for their freshly made steam Soup Dumplings or Xiao Long Bao 小籠包 and their hand-made noodle. Seats were very tight, you are really eating with your neighbors, we didn’t really mind.

Menu was very diverse, Chinese, Vietnamese, even Japanese. Boyfriend and I shared a bowl of hand-made beef noodle 手工牛肉拉麵刀削麵 and freshly made Soup Dumplings/Xiao Long Bao 現做小籠包. I didn’t see the noodle chef, but saw the Xiao Long Bao lady, she was busy kneeing the dough and making the bao, very interesting! Noodle portion was pretty good.

Beef Brisket Hand-Made Noodles – excellent noodle texture. You can choose from variety of noodle width, we picked the 2nd thickest, perfect Al-Dente! We picked a lighter soup noodle, cause we had a spicy meal the night before. Beef brisket was extremely tender, the way it should be.

Soup Dumplings/Xiao Long Bao – 8 pcs to an order, and freshly made and steamed. Originally we wanted to order the crab roe and pork soup dumpling, but they were out. So we ordered the regular pork soup dumpling.  They were pretty good, but I was hoping the dumpling would not leak … it did leak a little … still taste very good!

LAO SZE CHUAN 老四川 – CHICAGO, IL (芝加哥 CHINATOWN)

Finally back from travelling, we were in Chicago spending the Thanksgiving. Lots to catch up!

First, we tried one of the busiest Sichuan restaurant in Chicago Chinatown, very disappointed. All dishes were missing the essential “Ma – numbing” from Sichuan cuisine. Service was extremely bad, rude manager! While we were waiting, there was the rude manager outside yelling down the street; he was holding a mini flash light point all over the place and to his customers, was it really necessary? Oh we waited 1 hour to be seated.

We got seated upstairs, no services at all, I wasn’t expecting much anyway, but this was bad. We wait 20 mins to flag down a waiter to take our order. We ordered 3 dishes, took 30 mins for the first 2 dishes, and another 30 mins for the final dish. We had to flag down another waiter to get rice, oh boy, he just nodded this head and kept walking. What does that mean? Did he heard us or not??

Alright, back to the dishes.

Dry Chili Chicken: It was spicy and crispy. But where is the numbing sensation? Where is the peppercorn that’s makes the “Ma” in Sichuan cuisine? Very disappointed.

Dry Chili Chicken - it was spicy, but no numbing!

Napa with Wine Sauce: It was ok, I can make this at home.

Spicy Boiled Beef: Bad … the whole dish was lack of flavor, spicy, but not numbing!

Boiled Beef in Spicy Sichuan Saue - spicy, but again no numbing! To me, its a must in Sichuan Cuisine!

Definitely not worth the wait, won’t be back.

Connie’s Pizza – Chicago, IL (Chinatown)

This place is huge. Plenty of parking, it looks a bit touristy with the Connie’s truck on top of a pole. Chicago is famous for their the dish pizza but I was a little disappointed with Connie’s pizza.

We arrived at 11:45am for an early lunch, plenty of tables available.

There were 6 of us. We ordered it  Mozzarella Wedges and house salad as appetizers.

House salad was so-so, really nothing to talk about.

image

Mozzarella Wedges – nice, warm, and gooey, so good!!!

Deep dish pizza – very disappointed. The crust was way too thick, not much sauce, makes it feel dry. I like Lou Malnati’s deep wish much more.
