LOS ANGELES TRIP (DAY 6) – COCO ICHIBANYA 壱番屋, IRVINE, CA

Happy New Year!!

I’ve been on holidays last couple weeks, so lacking the updates. I wanted to finish up my last post for LA trip before starting on the others.  Otherwise, I will never get it done.

So the last morning in LA, we have to take a 5pm flight … of course we had to finish lunch before departure.

Coco Ichibanya 壱番屋 is a top curry rice restaurant in Japan, and currently there is 4 franchise in USA – all in Southern CA. This one is located in Irvine, it does get a bit busy during lunch rush.

Pork Cutlet Curry Rice – plenty of sauce, cutlet is crispy but a little dry to my liking.

Tomato & Clam Omelet Curry Rice – egg omelet was very moist and smooth, plenty of clams and curry sauce … perfect with rice.

LOS ANGELES TRIP (DAY 5) – DIN TAI FUNG 鼎泰豐, ARCADIA, CA

My must go list has Din Tai Fung 鼎泰豐! Another dreadful drive from LA to Arcadia. Nonethless we are here, I so wish there is one in the Bay Area!

There is no line!!!! Last time we were in LA, we were discouraged by the long line, so we skipped. This time its a weekday and rainy, so we just walk right in. Inside still very packed.

Spicy Wonton in Hot Red Sauce 紅油炒手 – absolutely delicious! Not very spicy and the sauce was just perfect.

A nice warm House Chicken Soup Steamed 元盅土雞湯, very clear chicken soup, chicken was tender with abundance flavor. However, I think the Din Tai Fung I had in Taiwan did better.

Noodle with Spicy Sauce 擔擔麵 – it was good, but does not stand out from the crowd.

The must order! Juicy Pork & Crab Dumplings 蟹粉小籠包 – served piping hot! Perfect size dumplings each filled with hot soup. Soup was simply amazing. Dip the dumplings with soy sauce, vinegar and ginger … there you go!

Sesame Bun 芝麻包 – have to get a sweet dessert bun. Sesame bun was super soft and filled with sesame paste, not overly sweeten. We asked them to cut the bun in half 🙂

LOS ANGELES TRIP (DAY 5) – MIKAWAYA MOCHI, LITTLE TOKYO, LOS ANGELES, CA

After our little lunch at Class 302, we took our chance in the LA bad traffic and drove to Little Tokyo. It was rainy and lots of traffic, a 1 hour drive turns into 2.5 hours drive!!

Nonetheless we arrived, not a lot of people due to a rainy weekday.

Japanese Village Plaza (Little Tokyo LA)

Japanese Village Plaza (Little Tokyo LA)

The Japanese Village Plaza is not as big as I expected, couple blocks with cute shops and restaurant. Honestly I was a little turned off by the rain.

We stopped in Mikawaya because our friend said they have fresh Mochi Ice Cream. Yeah!! Love Mochi! Only 1 table inside, no wait … very quickly we just wanted to try it out.

All of the Mochi Ice Cream are excellent! Soft, chewy mochi filled with creamy ice cream! We picked 4 flavors: Mango, Sesame, Matcha/Green Tea, Guava (good guava taste, refreshing!)

LOS ANGELES TRIP (DAY 5) – CLASS 302 三年二班台灣料理, IRVINE, CA

Our last full day in LA, my to visit restaurant is Class 302 三年二班台灣料理. Our friend has to work, so we browse around the city ourselves. Found a Class 302 nearby, here we go headed for lunch. Supposedly Class 302 is popular for their Shaved Ice, but It was too early and cool to eat ice.

The place is not very good, but my hubby said the tables and chair does look like the Asia classrooms. A huge chalkboard on the wall with their menu items written on it. Cute little Asian school kid toys. There was a DIY bubble tea area, but we didn’t buy the cup.

Ok, just the 2 of us. Firstly Braised Tofu – ok, I love any kinds of braised tofu or fried tofu, period!

Popcorn Chicken 鹽酥雞– medium spicy. Portion was pretty good consider for an appetizer. Chicken was crispy, however, it was marinaded with a very sweet flavoring. Not my type of popcorn chicken. I think the 1st Popcorn Chicken place we visited taste better.

Fried Pork Chop Bento Box – fried pork chop was toward the sweet side too. Portion size was good, the bento tint comes in 2 layers. Top layer is veggies and eggs, bottom is rice with minced pork. I think the food in bento box is better than the fried pork chop.

Our full lunch meal – we didn’t finish the popcorn chicken, took the left overs with us.

LOS ANGELES TRIP (DAY 4) – MEET FRESH 鮮芋仙, DESSERT, IRVINE, CA

We were extremely full after dinner, but I still wanted to try the well-known Taiwanese dessert chain Meet Fresh 鮮芋仙. It’s currently the only 1 in the States. Place was very roomy, and 60% filled. Meet Fresh is popular for Taro Ball.

Honestly I think its quite expensive for this amount. Average price is $7 included tax per dessert, and the cup is not even full. But I am glad I tried it out 🙂

We ordered Meet Fresh Signature – herbal jelly, herbal shaved ice, taro balls and cream on top. The shave ice is not bad, very refreshing, the taro ball was very qq, just the perfect texture. Perfect sweetness!
